The focus of the following empirical analysis is the influence of knowledge management framework on dissolution of joint ventures (JVs). Knowledge management in this study consisted of a dynamic and continuous set of processes, knowledge creation, knowledge transfer, and knowledge application. In addition, the concept of Brownian motion is used to describe knowledge transfer, the stochastic learning behavior in a joint venture. This study demonstrated knowledge management framework is appropriate to predict the instability of joint ventures, and also proved the two competitive factors, direct competition of parent firms and the shipment growth of joint venture’s industry as moderators to regulate the main effects. This research constructed a unique database to measure the knowledge process of joint ventures, used citation weighted patents number as the proxy of knowledge, and collected 123 joint venture cases in electronics industry with knowledge data from 1996 to 2000. Two models are developed and compared to discuss the effects of knowledge management to the instability of IJVs. The logit regression model is used first, which without considering the age of joint ventures. And then accelerated failure time model is employed, which considered the time factor and was proved that it’s a better explanatory power than logit regression model. A managerial implication of the findings is knowledge management effectively from parent firms could influence a joint venture’s persistent.
