本研究從敵對狀態的途徑，嘗試分析東北亞區域權力於冷戰後相互競逐的動因。將藉由東北亞區域內安全關係較受矚目之國家，如台灣海峽兩岸、兩韓、中國與日本關係，單獨針對二國間比較的研究，以其於政治、經濟、軍事議題權力競逐的過程進行探討，並希冀預測區域中雖沒有完全的和平寧靜，但仍不會引發戰爭的原因與未來發展，建構一個足以分析東北亞安全局勢的架構。
　　由本文中兩岸、兩韓、日中關係這些個案研究顯示：(1)中國大陸與台灣的區域敵對，在政治上、軍事上維持著為多數人所了解的緊張關係，儘管以政府利益觀點而言，皆避免政治危機並維持持續性的經濟交易往來；(2)南韓與北韓的區域敵對在軍事與政治上仍然緊張，僅有小小的經濟互動，但對於為多數人所了解的動態則在逐漸減少；(3)中國與日本的關係現在並不構成區域敵對，但是本文架構將提供一些指標得以洞察何處會形成區域敵對。
　　以本文理論研究結果而言，將區域敵對概念延伸應用為進一步理論與經驗研究的根據，以及實際操作變數，建立成為研究區域安全動態的有效分析工具，對於未來東北亞的研究、日本與南亞的外交政策走向等，皆可應用與觀察。

This research attempts to explore the dynamics of power competitions in Northeast Asia in the post-Cold War era from the perspective of regional rivalry. By focusing on three cases in the region: China-Taiwan relations, North-South Korea relations, and China-Japan interplays, this research 1) examines the reasons why three dyadic cases are rival politically, but less likely to go to war between them and also 2) preview their interplays in the future and implications for regional security.
Stemming from three case studies, the findings show that: (1) mainland China and Taiwan have the tensional relationship in politics and military, although both governments try to avoid the political crisis and maintain the long-enduring economical interactions; (2) South Korea and North Korea are still tensional in military and politics but some interactions in economic dimension, and the rivalry is reducing; (3) Relations between China and Japan are not a case of regional rivals yet, but this research provide some possible triggering factors to form such a rivalry.
In terms of theoretical significance, this research concludes that it is worthy to extend the concept of regional rivalry as a theoretical framework for the study of regional security. The further research might test its validity by observing especially Japan-ASEAN relations, and power politics in East Asian setting.
