This study aims to examine the relationship between obesity and individual’s labor market outcome: employment status and wage rate. The study also extends the analysis into service and non-service sectors. Adopting the bivariate probit model and using child's body mass index (BMI) as the instrumental variable of parents’ obesity status, Wald test statistics indicate that there is an endogeneity problem and the empirical results shows that there is a significant and negative correlation between obesity and employment.
As regards to the analysis on examining the relationship between obesity and wage rate, this study firstly uses Heckman (1979)’s selection bias model to detect the selection bias; however, there is no selection bias problem. Then, adopting the two stage least squares regression (TSLS) model and using child's body mass index (BMI) as the instrumental variable of parents’ obesity status to control for the possible endogeneity problem; however, Hausman test does not confirm there is endogeneity. Thus, this study uses ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model and finds that there is a negative but insignificant correlation between obesity and wage rate. The results of the interaction of obesity and service sector show that there is a significant and negative correlation between this interaction and wage rate.
