Adolescents with inherent vulnerabilities are more susceptible to becoming immersed in the online world. Past research has indicated that comorbid ADHD and internet addiction (IA) cases have lower recovery rates and higher relapse rates in treatment, with hostility identified as a vulnerability factor for adolescents with IA. This study aims to examine the association between hostility dimensions and IA among adolescents with ADHD traits and explore the role of executive function.
This study recruited 61 adolescents with ADHD traits to assess their levels of multi-dimensional hostility, IA , and executive function. Hostility cognition, hostility affect, and suppressed hostility behavior, excluding expressed hostility behavior, were significantly positively correlated with IA. A two-way ANOVA showed that the interaction effects of hostility cognition, hostility affect, and suppressed hostility behavior with executive function on IA were significant. Improved executive function lessens the influence of hostility on IA , highlighting its role as a protective factor.
These findings suggest that enhancing executive function through clinical interventions could reduce IA risk among adolescents with high hostility, guiding future neuropsychological rehabilitation programs.
