本研究選擇台灣竹苗地區,屬於西部平原區與麓山帶交界處之斗煥坪地區為研究區域,此區域在地質構造上包含新城斷層─寶山背斜構造與鹿廚坑斷層─永和山背斜構造,二者並為東西向的斗換坪斷層所區隔開來。
本研究以物理模型(黏土與砂盒實驗)評估早期之東西向正斷層(即斗換坪斷層)在後期擠壓應力作用下,形成之走向滑移斷層與褶皺衝斷帶中所見之逆衝斷層及褶皺之相互影響,期望透過構造物理模型瞭解研究區域之地質構造發育的時空分布特性與其三維的幾何形貌。
研究結果顯示斗換坪斷層為早期既存的東西向正斷層,因受菲律賓海洋板塊擠壓應力影響,而反轉為一東西走向高角度兼具逆衝與走向滑移特性的斜滑移斷層,並在持續擠壓應力作用下,其作為後續發育北北東─南南西走向之鹿廚坑斷層的側斜坡。另外當北北東走向的逆衝斷層與東西向的走向滑移斷層交會時,逆衝斷層會憑藉著小規模的走向滑移斷層(P-shear)連結至走向滑移斷層變形帶。而兩者交會處,斷層走向改變且斷層性質兼具逆衝與走向滑移的特性。
