(Concordance between Weight Status and Weight Perception)
40-64歲-男性(OR=3.51)。
Weight perception is one of the vital parts of health management, weight misperception may affect people’s weight control, diet, one’s exercise habit even their psychological dimension. The purposes of this study is to explore weight perception of the three groups, respectively, young age, middle age and elderly in Taiwan. Second, to understand the differences weight perception in gender. Third, try to figure out the characteristics that associated with misperception.
We used the East Asia Social Survey (EASS) database, (n= 2040). Age between 18 to 39 years old belongs to the younger age group; 40-64 years old are classified into the middle age group; over or equal to 65 are divided into the elderly group. According to Ministry of Health and Welfare, Taiwan, body mass index (BMI) ≤ 18.49 is underweight; BMI 18.50-23.99 is normal weight; BMI≥ 24.00 is classified as overweight. Compared the actual weight status and the perceived weight, all samples were divided into three categories: over perception, right perception and underestimation .
Results of this study showed that Young people tend to over-perceive their weight (26.9%); Elderly people tend to under-perceive their weight. (33.3%). The female tends to over-perceive their weight than male (29.2% vs 6.4%); male (28.3%) tends to under-perceive their weight than female (9.4%). 18-39-female (OR=5.89), no exercise habit (OR=1.63). 40-64-female (OR=5.27), college or above (OR=1.66), no chronic disease (OR=2.41), living in urban (OR=1.68) tends to over-perceive weight.
18-39-male (OR=6.803), under college (OR=1.59), do not live in urban (OR=2.65). 40-64-male (OR=3.51). ≥ 65 –male (OR=2.49), not in marital status (OR=2.49), tend to under-perceive weight. To conclude, weight perception differs through ethnics, ages, and gender. Authorities should focus resources on those who tend to misunderstand their weight.
