Humanoid companion robots specifically designed for young users remain rare. most existing models take the form of pet robots or are intended for elderly or disabled care. This study targets the otaku demographic and introduces "Hoshi Zero," an anime-style humanoid companion robot. The research hypothesizes that otaku users, due to their propensity to form emotional attachments with virtual characters and their receptiveness to new technologies, may have more positive experiences with humanoid companion robots and represent a likely early adopter group.
Hoshi Zero stands approximately 160 cm tall, wheeled base plate, and supports functions such as gaze, handholding and following, blinking, and tactile interaction. The study was conducted primarily at the NCKU doujinshi convention, the largest anime-related event in Tainan, where 93 valid questionnaires were collected.
Results indicate a positive correlation between the tendency to form emotional connections with virtual characters and positive user experiences with the robot. No significant relationship was found between user experience and education level, gender, sexual orientation, or loneliness. technology acceptance could not be assessed due to sampling limitations. The findings also demonstrate that perceptions of animacy positively influence feelings of companionship.
