Dementia is a symptom of a population that is increasing year by year and will gradually affect the whole society. With the increase of individual age and the impact of chronic diseases, not only physiological functions but also human cognitive ability will decline progressively. Although patients with mild dementia have significant impairment of semantic memory and episodic memory, their implicit memory, such as procedural memory and perceptual priming, are still intact. Spaced retrieval training is a learning strategy that allows people to retain target information by the recall at increasing time intervals. It is a nonpharmacological therapy that can compensate for daily life problems caused by memory impairment and help dementia learn to perform daily tasks.
Although there are many benefits of spaced retrieval training, there is still some limitation in presenting its training content. In recent years, many studies have used technology as an alternative to assist older people with dementia. Real-time interactive feedback through interactive technology can help to improve their learning effects. Therefore, we use augmented reality to provide a different presentation and interactive modes for spaced retrieval training. The training content is designed to meet the individual needs of dementia patients. Through field observations and expert interviews, we understand the daily life performance of dementia, and then contact a family member of a mild dementia case through a therapist, and finally decide to use the case's medication behavior as the training content. By analyzing the rules of augmented reality, the steps of taking medication are transformed into augmented reality presentations. Through visual stimuli, the case can establish related memories and achieve the effect of learning target information.
This research developed a device that combines spaced retrieval training and augmented reality. It allows mild dementia to learn the fixed sequence of taking the medication by operating the augmented reality markers. The results have proved that it can improve the initiative of the case to take medicine correctly in daily life with good usability results. We expected to give future researches a potential development and have more opportunities to develop cognitive training and augmented reality for dementia.
