This study centers on the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross), integrating Catholic narrative theology, metalworking art, and practice-based research to investigate how artistic creation functions as a medium for religious narration and contemporary transformation of meaning. The researcher assumes the role of an “author–artist–researcher,” engaging in a dialectical process between theory and practice to construct a creative methodology that synthesizes narrative, materiality, and faith.
The study begins with a comprehensive literature review, examining the narrative traditions of Catholicism and the historical development of the Via Crucis imagery. It analyzes the communicative processes of biblical narratives, the symbolic system of religious images, and the role of metal craftsmanship in sacred art. Particular attention is given to the materiality of copper—its malleability, processability, and transformative qualities—and how these properties embody emotional, temporal, and spiritual dimensions.
Methodologically, the research adopts a narrative approach grounded in hermeneutics, incorporating the concept of the “fusion of horizons” (Horizontverschmelzung) and the notion of effective history. It is further supported by reflective practice, systematic documentation, and hands-on metal forming processes, forming a comprehensive framework that bridges artistic practice and academic inquiry.
The research outcomes are presented through a series of fourteen Via Crucis artworks created in copper. From sketching and shaping to final presentation, the works develop a visual narrative language that integrates traditional religious themes with contemporary artistic expression. These artworks reinterpret the Passion of Christ while conveying emotional intensity and spiritual depth through metal surface treatment and form.
In addition, the study explores exhibition practices, including gallery display, outdoor installations, and simulated environments, to analyze audience engagement, public response, and the function of art within religious rituals. Findings indicate that metalworking serves not merely as a technical medium but as a narrative vehicle capable of accumulating and releasing emotional energy through material transformation. The physical properties and limitations of copper also shape artistic language, fostering innovation within constraints.
This research contributes to: (1) establishing a theoretical framework for metalworking as a narrative medium; (2) expanding the application of practice-based research in religious art; and (3) proposing a dynamic model of emotional accumulation and release in artistic creation. Finally, methodological reflections and suggestions for future research are offered to support interdisciplinary studies in art and theology.
