Increasing use of English in undergraduate university classrooms in NNES countries and the growing number of NNES students that are pursuing university education in English speaking countries has highlighted a substantial problem with plagiarism in English L2 students’ academic writing. This situation has been significantly influenced by the concurrent proliferation of the Internet and of the ubiquitous use of digital media. This research attempts to isolate the significant themes and findings within a decade of English L2 plagiarism research at the university level. A corpus of 55 journal articles spanning the years 2004-2013 was generated through the search engine Web of Science (WOS) and snowballing search techniques. The methodology employed was intended to establish a corpus that would capture the most significant themes and findings within the field of English L2 university plagiarism research. The findings indicate two major themes that have a crucial bearing on instructors’ approaches and reactions to plagiarism. The first is that a very large portion of what is considered plagiarism is inadvertent and very likely the result of the confluence of two forces; the expectation of quality academic writing that is rich in citations and the still developing writing skills of the English L2 university student. There is an almost universal call for reference, citation and plagiarism avoidance instruction. In tandem, is the need for instructors to recognize that the form of writing produced by many English L2 university students constitutes a natural stage in writing skill development and is not an intentional attempt to steal the ideas of others. A secondary theme is that of changing concept of plagiarism. This is mediated by digital culture and a concern that the current definition is far too ethical and western-centric.
