In contemporary Taiwanese society, contentious politics has become critical for citizens to express opinions and influence public policy. Since the 2010s, young people have frequently taken to the streets, seeking to reshape the political landscape. The 2014 Sunflower Movement is a prominent example. However, the frequent protests may also reflect a sense of political alienation among Taiwanese youth toward the existing political landscape. This study aims to explore the relationship between university students’ personality traits, political alienation, and contentious politics through personality theory. Using the data from the fourth year of the “Political Socialization of College Students in Taiwan” longitudinal study, this study examines the direct effect of personality traits on political alienation, participation, and attitudes in contentious politics, as well as whether personality traits indirectly influence university students’ engagement in and attitudes toward contentious politics through political alienation. This study finds that emotional stability and openness to experience have negative relationships with political alienation. Extraversion positively influences actual participation in protest actions, agreeableness negatively affects the intensity of protest participation, and openness to experience has a comprehensive positive effect on contentious politics. Additionally, emotional stability and openness to experience can indirectly affect support for the Sunflower Movement and future participation in violent protests through political alienation. In summary, this study provides a new perspective, confirming the influence of personality traits on political alienation and contentious politics, and establishes an innovative theoretical foundation for future studies on contentious politics.
