This thesis focuses on museum architecture during the 19th-century British Raj period. The chosen museums for examination are the Indian Museum Kolkata (formerly Indian Museum Calcutta), the Central Museum of Jaipur (formerly Albert Hall Museum), and the Lahore Museum; each of which was situated in a distinct cultural and political context. The research approach employed is ‘architecture as a representation of realities’, in order to explore how museum architecture reflects various historical and environmental factors. Throughout chapters three to five of this paper, analysis of the case studies encompasses four aspects: museum history, site selection, architectural forms, and exhibitions.
The research findings reveal that during the British Raj period, museums were influenced by Western museum concepts introduced by colonizers. However, they also developed unique characteristics distinct from Western museums due to the complex interplay of India’s political, cultural, and historical factors. These differences are particularly pronounced in terms of architectural style and exhibition content. The architects, sponsors, and curators with diverse backgrounds, identities, and ideals significantly influenced the core meaning, architectural space, and exhibition content of these museums.
