音樂劇《悲慘世界》，改編自雨果的同名小說。起初荀伯格和鮑伯利兩人將數首歌曲構成的法語概念版，搬到法國觀眾面前；之後製作人卡麥隆・麥金塔擴大概念版的編制，並改編為英語版，《悲慘世界》音樂劇正式登上世界舞臺；麥金塔表示此劇是繼《貓》之後，全世界上演最久的音樂劇，之後，更結合了電影的表演形式，推出音樂劇電影版，其架構原則上按照音樂劇。此外，音樂劇和音樂劇電影，兩者在不同的演出條件和限制下，因應用原著劇情的手法不同，而各有演出特色及方式。
　　本論文第一章，先釐清關於史詩定義、應用手法以及想法；其次觀察史詩概念在歌劇中的表現方式。第二章回顧雨果的生平和政治思想，瞭解浪漫主義的時代背景；從雨果崇尚的人文主義思想，探討其作品風格，進而瞭解《悲慘世界》小說背後所蘊含的意義；並回顧小說內容後，觀察雨果的寫作手法，從中瞭解故事的原始架構。第三章分析《悲慘世界》音樂劇的表演，除了回顧其中的六種版本，本章探討的表演方式以十周年版和二十五周年版為主。第四章首先探討《悲慘世界》音樂劇電影版的呈現方式和特色；接著比較舞臺音樂劇和音樂劇電影版，在運用相同架構上，劇情和歌曲的調整；最後的部分則是比較兩種演出版的演員，各自詮釋表演的特色。

Les Misérables is a musical based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alan Boubili developed the musical as a French-language concept album, and then in 1980 performed it in front of a live audience in Paris. In 1983 the producer Cameron Mackintosh was introduced to the work, and worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company to adapt it into English, with the first performance of this version being presented in London in 1985.
Les Misérables has since been performed in many cities around the world, becoming the world’s second longest running musical after Mackintosh’s another production Cats. In 2012 the musical was adapted for the cinema, with some differences from the original stage work, due to the different limitations and opportunities inherent in both media.
Since Victor Hugo stated that Les Misérables was intended to be an epic work that showed the whole of society, chapter one examines the writing styles and characteristics of many of the standard works in the past genre, and then discusses how these have been applied in this novel, as well as in the musical based on it. Chapter two then discusses the issue of Romanticism by examining Victor Hugo’s life and political philosophy. To explore the themes and meanings of Les Misérables, this thesis discusses both the content of the book and style it is written in, and then the structure of the story. In chapter three, which analyzes Les Misérables the musical, the researcher not only discusses the six versions of this work that have been performed on stage or recorded, but also analyzes the differences in performance and presentation of the tenth and twenty-fifth anniversary versions. Chapter four then examines the movie version of the musical, including how it is performed and the styles it adopts to tell the story, and in particular how these differ from the stage version. The final chapter then compares the performances of the actors in the tenth- and twenty-fifth anniversary stage productions, and movie musical.
