「製陶」一事本就為人類文化中不可或缺的工藝技術之一,在尚未有文字記載的史前文化開始一直至當代,製陶文化仍舊不停地存在於這社會上,不論是遠在於美、非、歐板塊地區,或近區亞洲等地帶均有許多關於陶器製作的民族紀錄。在台灣這塊土地上,許多群體曾經皆有製陶的文化蹤跡,然而在與外界開始接觸後,這項傳統製陶的技術與文化也隨著外來物的引進而放棄使用,甚至消逝,一直到近數年來才逐漸復興尋回。然而如果是面對無文字紀錄的史前文化,當從考古文化層中發掘出土的陶質遺物,以操作鏈(Chaîne Opératoire)為分析方法,從陶遺物上所殘留下的診斷特徵現象能夠反映出所使用的是何種技術,並且將技術串連起來形成一條製作工序鏈,從中反映出製陶與技術之層面、行為與技術程序之層面、製陶者的技術知識之層面,以及文化傳統與技術邊界之層面,深度探究一靜態物品背後所延伸出的一系列的動態過程,同時涉及到技術的選擇、適用性、手勢行為、個體性與群體性關係及認知維度等面向進而完整化其技術傳統與系統。
本研究以陶器操作鏈作為主要研究方法與理論,並以位在台灣東部海岸山脈東側北段的水璉遺址為主要研究對象,其在發掘時出土大量陶質遺物,並在前人研究中此遺址可能除了對內有自產陶器以外,對外也有互動交流的跡象存在,因此被認為是一個具有製作陶器的據點。透過特徵結構分析與技術辨識相結合進行陶片觀察(內外表面及橫截面),抽絲剝繭出專屬水璉遺址的製陶技術工序:一套用於大型中型容器的主軸技術工序以及一套用於小型容器的次要技術工序,還有可能具有學徒制的製陶文化存在,從技術系統中反映遺址內部單一個體與群體間圍繞製陶一事所擁有的規範、歸屬與認同。同時也將水璉遺址與同樣屬於金屬器時代晚期的兩個遺址做初步比較,透過兩個遺址所持有的陶質遺物分析,除了對內揭開水璉遺址層層訊息,同時也增添對於水璉遺址的陶遺物向外傳播與影響的可能性。
"Pottery making" is one of the indispensable craft and technology in human culture, starting from prehistoric cultures that were not recorded through writing until present-day cultures. In Taiwan, many groups used to produce pottery. When pottery relics are excavated from prehistoric archaeological sites, they can be studied using the chaîne opératoire as an analytical method: diagnostic features left on the pottery can reflect what technologies were used, and these technologies are connected together to reconstract a production chain.
This study attempts to use the pottery chaîne opératoire as the main theorical and methodological tool to investigate the site of Shuilian located in the northern part
of the East Coast Mountains of Hualien County. A large number of pottery fragments were unearthed during the excavation of Shuilian. It belongs to the late Metal Age and has been dated by researchers to 600–300 B.P. According to previous research, in addition to the locally produced vessels, some pottery fragments may also show signs of interaction with other sites. This study combines characteristic structure analysis and technical identification to observe pottery sherds (inner and outer surfaces as well as cross-sections), and sort out the pottery technology processes exclusive to the Shuilian site. Such an analysis allows us to understand the pottery maker's behavior, technology choices and technology system. The following three points are the results of observation, and will be discussed deeply: (a) the main technology processes for large and medium-sized vessels is described ; (b) a secondary technical process for small vessels is also documented;(c) the possibility of communication and interaction with other sites is then discussed. The technical system reflects the norms, attributions and identities surrounding pottery making between individuals and groups within the site.
Comparisons were conducted between the site of Shuilian and two nearby sites
(Dexing site and Gangkou site) that also belong to the late Metal Age. The analysis
of pottery fragments from the three different sites revealed various information about Shuilian, and also raised questions on the possibility of the external dissemination and influence of the pottery relics from Shuilian.
