The school bell of National Cheng-Kung University (NCKU) is one of the oldest bells among all universities in Taiwan and has a rich cultural value. Being casting at the end of 1952 by 60 Arsenal (at Kaohsiung) under the Combined Logistics Commands of Taiwan, this bell has serviced NCKU for many years. A comprehensive study of the bell from technical aspects thus has its special important meanings from cultural reservation. In this paper, the current progress on the technical aspect of this study is briefly reported, including 3D geometric modeling, vibration and acoustic experiments, material characterization and modal analysis using finite element method. It is expected that through this study, the engineering characteristics of the bell can be clarified and the obtained technical data would be helpful for revealing the related technology level of Taiwan six decades ago. We believe that in conjunction with its special historic role, these technical data would significantly enhance the culture value of the NCKU school bell.
