Recently, with the increase of production and labor cost, Taiwan's advantage of low cost has been replaced by Mainland China and other countries in Southeast Asia. Therefore, in order to reduce the impact of environment changes, Taiwan has to shift its attention and upgrade levels under different operating patterns. Developing new product is a good way. Although the increasing importance of new product performance, little has been done in the literature in examining the relationships among the internal determinants, innovation types and external institution assistance, and the performance of new venture’s product. Therefore, this study attempts to fill the gap in the literature by providing an integrative research framework through extensive literature review to identify the key determinants and to examine the relationships among these determinants and the new product performance. Based on resource-based perspective and resource-dependence theory, hypotheses were proposed and then examined through an empirical study.
The populations in the study are Information Center in the Taiwan Securities & Futures Institute and The Yearbook of Incubators of Small and Medium Enterprises. A random sampling method was used to select the firms which are founded in ten years. 530 questionnaires were mailed. Of the 530 questionnaires mailed, 129 responses were received and seventh of them were incomplete. The remaining 122 valid and complete questionnaires were used for the quantitative analysis. It represents a useable response rate of 23.02%.
The major finding of this study include: First, the results of the Multiple-Regression analyses show support for the direct effects of organizational resources and leader characteristics on the new product performance. Secondly, the results of the ANOVA analyses show support for the direct effects of organizational strategies and organizational culture on the new product performance. Finally, the results of Regression and ANOVA analyses indicate that organizational resources, leader characteristics, organizational strategies, organizational culture have interaction effects with the innovation types and external institution assistance on the new product performance.
