Managing innovation better than its competitors is one of the main objectives of a business that wishes to survive and thrive in today’s economy. As innovation becomes the
core competence in the world change extremely, possession of patents has been the critical one of enterprises’successful factors. Besides, understanding why firms diversify and how diversification affects the way resources are managed in diversified firms have naturally
become important objective of strategy research.
This study try to figure out how organizational slacks affect innovation process under different degree of product diversity circumstances, and the different role of absorbed and unabsorbed slack play in innovation. Namely, how can different kinds of slacks used under diverse product strategy or focus product strategy? Hence, two purposes of this study are:(1) to examine the main effect of organizational slack, including absorbed slack and unabsorbed slack on innovation performance; (2) to investigate if product diversification will moderate the relationship between organizational slack and innovation performance.
599 Taiwan information-electronic firms were included, in which 296 firms were listed company of Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE), 226 firms were Over-the-Counter (OTC)
listed company and 77 were emerging stock firms. The results showed that there are positive impact of absorbed slack and unabsorbed slack on firm’innovation performance.
And the moderating effect of product diversity on the organizational slack—innovation performance relationship are firms with focus product strategy (low product diversity) can perform higher innovation outcome if obtain high amount of absorbed slack. Moreover, firms with diverse product strategy (high product diversity) that contain high amount of unabsorbed slack can be better innovator, too.
