In order to improve medication adherence, a smart object called MediCup, proposed by Jye Ruey, is used to detect a three step medicine-taking scenario [7]. Practically speaking, several issues were found and could be discussed regarding the use of MediCup. The biggest issue is that the whole medication-taking process is too complicate, especially for the elderly, who are the specific users-group of MediCup.
To solve this problem, a smart object called Intelligent Pill Dispenser is proposed, which is a pill dispenser that can work in conjunction with MediCup, and also overcome the complications inherent in the medication-taking process.
The main characteristic of Intelligent Pill Dispenser is that it can dispense pills automatically while sensing the NFC (Near Field Communication) tag installed in the MediCup, which simplifies the process of taking medicine via MediCup. In other hand, the touch screen on Intelligent Pill Dispenser provides a simple and concise interface for users, reminding users to take medicine at the right time; furthermore, a mobile application is designed for caregivers (doctors, nurses, family members of patient) to learn patients’ medication adherence in real time.
Moreover, Intelligent Pill Dispenser has two unique features that other medicine boxes cannot achieve: First, Intelligent Pill Dispenser is the unique pill dispense system that could server for more than one user. Second, Intelligent Pill Dispenser is the only one pill dispense system that could cooperate with the smart cup (MediCup) to detect the pill taking movement of patients.
Our expectation is that with the cooperation between Intelligent Pill Dispenser and MediCup, a complete pill dispensing, pill taking and medication-taking detection system can be created.
