  • 黎熹年的處女作小說《千年狐》圍繞於描述分別處於不同地理與時空背景下的三位主角:黃阿提密斯、魚玄機與狐狸的故事。三位主角的透過共同的亞洲酷兒女性身分而有所連結,而他們也因與主流價值牴觸而於個別的社會中經歷不同程度的邊緣化。本文首先探討三位主角為何在各自的人際關係中被視為他者—生活在一九八零年代的溫哥華,阿提密斯對於自己身為一對白人夫婦所收養的中國裔加拿大人身分的立足點感到困惑;魚玄機則是一位極富文學素養的中國唐代酷兒女詩人,並背負著前茶樓妓女、被休之妻的身分;身為狐狸精的狐狸與她的狐狸家族背道而馳,全因她非比尋常地著迷於超自然能力與人類文化,十分嚮往與人類交流、與人類女性的親密接觸。我主張藉由跨國女性主義的角度閱讀此小說能帶來一個嶄新的視角,即邊緣化女性如何正向肯定她們多層次的邊緣性並將其轉變為獲得賦權的泉源,從而獲得身分自決的自主權。本文借鑒諸位女性主義學者的理論以分析三位主角的自我發展,如康斯坦斯.理查茲(Constance S. Richards)的身分建構(selfhood constructionism)概念、貝爾·胡克斯(bell hooks)的選擇邊緣(choosing the margin)論述,以及瑪麗亞·盧戈內斯(María Lugones)所提出的理論之旅行(travelling theory)。因應現代複雜的身分認同政治,本文旨在提倡換個角度思考個人身分定位、常規與他者之間的關係,並同時展現亞洲酷兒女性主體長久以來橫跨時間與空間的超越性與韌性。

    Larissa Lai’s debut novel, When Fox Is a Thousand, unfolds the stories of three protagonists, Artemis Wong, Yu Hsuan-Chi, and the Fox, who are set within distinct geographical and temporal contexts. These characters are connected through their shared identity as queer Asian women, and each experiences varying degrees of social marginalization from their respective societies as a result of their Otherness. The thesis first delves into why they are considered Other in their interpersonal relationships: Artemis feels confused about her footing being a Chinese-Canadian adoptee of a white couple in the 1980s Vancouver; Yu is a high-literate queer poetess, a former courtesan, and a repudiated wife living in the ninth-century Tang Dynasty; the Fox grows apart from her fox family because of her untypical fascination with supernaturality and human culture, longing for human interaction and intimacy with women. I argue that a transnational feminist approach to reading this novel can provide a new perspective on how marginalized female subjects recognize their multilayered marginality, which can transform into a source of empowerment and lead them to gain autonomy in self-determined identities. To examine each protagonist’s selfhood development, I draw on concepts of feminists, such as Constance S. Richards’ selfhood constructionism, bell hooks’ ideology of choosing the margin, and María Lugones’ travelling theory. This thesis proposes an alternative perspective on one’s positionality and the normative-other dynamics in response to contemporary complex identity politics while highlighting the spatial and temporal transcendence and resilience embodied by queer Asian female subjects.
