ABSTRACT
Knowledge has become one of the most important assets of the firms. Learning useful knowledge from outside through knowledge transfer is an effective way to strengthen firms’ competitive advantages. Since technology transfer is not only limited to exporting equipments and machines, the most critical is know-how. Thus, this research aims at examining how knowledge transfer mechanisms, knowledge management capabilities and the characteristics of knowledge affect technology transfer performance.
Although previous studies have concentrated many efforts on the issue of technology transfer, they tend to adopt case analysis rather than systematically questionnaire survey. This study asserts that knowledge transfer mechanisms, knowledge management capabilities, and the characteristics of knowledge are all critical factors for the performance of technology transfer. This research sent 750 questionnaires to manufacturing firms in Taiwan by mailing and there are 122 valid return responses. In this research, we use ANOVA, t-test, regression analysis, canonical correlation and LISREL to examine our hypotheses. The results of this study are as follows:
i. Knowledge transfer mechanisms would affect transfer performance, especially through externalization, combination and internalization. Socialization does not affect on the performance of technology transfer significantly in this study.
ii. Knowledge management capabilities would affect on transfer performance. When the degree of acquisition, conversion and application capabilities is higher, the performance of technology transfer would be better.
iii. For the fitness between mechanisms and capabilities, this research found that when a firms’ specific capability is strong, then they can choose suitable mechanisms to improve performance. When the conversion capability is good and fit to externalization and combination of knowledge transfer mechanisms, or when the application capability is good and fit to internalization of knowledge transfer mechanism, then the performance of technology transfer wouldl be better.
iv. Tacitness would decrease performance when knowledge is transferred. However, complexity affects positively on knowledge transfer performance. It is suggested that when knowledge is less tacit and more complex, the performance would be better.
