Due to their low density, corrosion resistance, thermal shock resistance, as well as outstanding high temperature mechanical and thermal properties, therefore, carbon/carbon composites have become the top choice for aircraft brake disk materials.
The variable in this study is the graphitization temperature and the order in graphitization treatment, in order to discuss the effect of graphitization on mechanical and tribological properties of carbon/carbon composites. The heat treatment of PAN-resin-based carbon/carbon composites is stabilized, carbonized and graphitization.
The higher graphitization temperature makes more change in the properties about weight, density, porosity, and thickness. If it only undergoes once graphitization treatment, regardless of G1 or G2, it makes the change of weight loss, decrease in density, increase in porosity and shrinkage in thickness is similar.
Non-G and G1-21 specimens, due to their final heat treatment is densification, therefore, matrix and fiber still bind well, that flexural strength is about 60MPa, and flexural modulus is about 23GPa. However, G2-21 and G2-23 specimens, due to just undergo G2 treatment, matrix and fiber bind worse, that flexural strength is about 30MPa, and flexural modulus 9GPa. In my study, I thick G1 treatment is necessary.
On tribology view point, G2-series specimens have more weight loss, due to their bad mechanical property. CG2 series specimens with high porosity, therefore, mechanical and tribological behavior is worse than G1-21 and G1*2-23 specimens.
On tribological behavior view point, G1*2-23 specimens (COF:0.464, Wear:7.68 mg)is the best, and G1-21 specimens is second(COF:0.338, Wear: 4.43 mg).
