花岡山是位於臺灣東部的考古遺址。該遺址的上層文化層被歸屬於金屬時代，其在2008年與2012年兩次大規模發掘中進行了廣泛的調查研究。負責發掘工作的趙金勇及其同事將此上層文化命名為「花岡山上層文化」。在花岡山上層文化出土的陶器中，有相當數量的器物具有灰色到黑色的表面。本研究即特別著重於分析這些灰黑色陶器。透過使用不同顯微鏡及不同觀察尺度對陶器表面和斷面進行仔細檢視，旨在重建陶器製作過程的相關面向（技術分析）——特別是表面處理和燒製氣氛。基於觀察結果，將針對這兩個關鍵生產階段形成相關假設，並透過實驗考古學加以檢驗。研究將特別強調煙燻技術，因為據推測花岡山上層出土的部分黑色器物是使用此方法對表面進行著色處理的。
實驗考古學是運用實驗方法，對於考古學上發現的相關各種現象進行實驗性重建。它使研究人員能夠探討史前技術、行為模式以及人與環境的互動關係，從而為古代生活方式提供更深入的了解。當實驗考古學與技術分析相結合時，便成為理解陶器生產方法（包括表面著色技術）的有力工具。
另本研究也比較和分析考古標本與實驗標本，以識別技術上的相似性和差異性，特別是在表面處理和燒製條件方面。其目的在闡明臺灣史前陶工所做的技術選擇，並提供對陶器製作實踐的更深入理解。

Huakangshan is an archaeological site located in eastern Taiwan. The upper layer of the site has been attributed to the Metal Age and was extensively investigated during two large-scale excavations conducted in 2008 and 2012. Chao Chin-yung and colleagues in charge of excavations named this layer "Huakangshan Upper-layer Culture". Among the pottery recovered from the upper layer of Huakangshan, a significant number consists of vessels with grey to black surfaces. This research focuses specifically on analysing these grey to black ceramics.
Through the careful examination of pottery surfaces and sections using different microscopes and scales of observation, the study aims to reconstruct aspects of the pottery production process （technological analysis）—particularly surface treatments and firing atmospheres. Based on the observations, hypothesis related to these two key production stages will be formulated and tested through experimental archaeology. Special emphasises will be placed on smudging technology, as it is hypothesized that some of the black vessels from the upper layer were coloured using this method to treat their surfaces.
Experimental archaeology involves the reconstruction of archaeological phenomena through controlled experimentation.It allows researchers to explore prehistoric technologies, behaviors, and human-environment interactions, thereby providing deeper insights into ancient lifeways.When combined with technological analysis, experimental archaeology becomes a powerful tool for understanding pottery production methods, including surface coloration techniques.
Ultimately, the study will compare and analyse both archaeological and experimental samples to identify technological similarities and differences, particularly in terms of surface treatment and firing conditions. This research aims to shed light on the technological choices made by prehistoric potters in Taiwan and to provide a deeper understanding of their ceramic production practices.
