  • Presently, there are no “Safety at Workplace Directives” to protect workers’ health at workplaces from potential exposure of nanoparticles. The first, and probably the main source of production of nanoparticles are laboratories, and laboratory workers are exposed to the highest risks. In order to avoid or to control risks, it is obligatory to follow safety procedures. Conducted studies conclude that due to the absence of specific standards for nanoparticles, workers are absolutely helpless in self-protection from extremely small nanoparticles.
The purpose of this study was to find out whether the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) laboratories in Tainan city in Taiwan follow all the required safety measures. Another aim was to find out whether those measures are sufficient for protection against nanoparticles. Finally, the question what additional measures should be applied in order to minimize risks in the laboratories was examined in the study. In order to explore risk assessment of nanotechnologies, such qualitative methods as in-depth interviewing for collection of data, and Grounded Theory for analysis of the data, have been used in this study. The Grounded Theory analysis, by using open coding process helps the researcher to better understand the data and more quickly identify the concepts reoccurring in the interviews. The results of the research revealed that procedures guidelines, management and standards are three main determinants, which form a basis for this research. The findings of the work also showed where university needed to improve and adjust management procedures in work with nanoparticles in the laboratory.
