彼得‧柏克是知名的文化史家。本論文之目的是從大眾與菁英來研究英國史家彼得‧柏克的文化史觀，時間是從一九六○年代至今。從新文化史興起之後，彼得‧柏克即佔有一席之地。第一章說明他的經歷和早期的思想，第二章討論他研究主題的轉變。第三章是在新文化史下，他的研究轉向多元。第四章是他近十年來的研究成果。

彼得‧柏克的著作很多，他關切史學史（史學理論）、思想史、文化史、歷史學與社會學、歷史學和人類學、文藝復興、歐洲近代早期等。從大眾和菁英約略可以看出他的文化史觀。雖然他不是一個理論性的歷史學家，但從他的著作可以瞭解文化史研究取向的性質。藉由大眾與菁英也能瞭解西方史學在這三十年間的轉變。

Peter Burke is the well-known cultural historian. The main topic of this research is Peter Burke’s the concept of cultural history from the commons and elite. Peter Burke played an important role from the rise of new cultural history. I illustrated his background and his early thought in Chapter 1. There was a transition from his research topic in Chapter 2. He changed direction of his research under new cultural history in Chapter 3. I analyzed his research during the past decade in Chapter 4.

Peter Burke has many historical writings. He was interested in historiography (historical theory), intellectual history, cultural history, history and social theory, history and anthropology, Renaissance, Early Modern Europe, etc. We can realize his concept of cultural history from the commons and elite. Although he is not a theoretical historian, we can understand his cultural historical approach. We also understand transformation of Western historiography in recent thirty years by means of the commons and elite.
