This research uses the concepts of object-oriented methodology to develop the software for the kinematic design of planar four-bar mechanisms. In order to have good extensibility, the program architecture is constructed according to the method of modularized combination.
Based on some fundamental theories of kinematic analysis and kinematic synthesis of planar four-bar mechanisms, the corresponding analysis modules and design modules are constricted. The analytic modules are saved as the core parts, while the design modules are the peripheries for various design purposes. There are two analysis modules, i.e., analysis module for four-bar linkage and analysis module for slider-crank, and three design modules, i.e., design module of crank-rocker, design module of symmetrical coupler curve and design module of slider-crank. This software is written with Graphics User Interface, and can be operated by mouse to select design parameters. User can use the program to design planar four-bar mechanisms easily. An example, is presented to show how to use this software to design a new stationary exercise apparatus.
