  • The impact of the ground deformation is one of serious tunneling issues, specifically beneath the urban area. The aim of this thesis is first to explain a ground profile and parameters, which are suitable with MRT Blue Line extension project in Bangkok, Thailand. Secondly, the finite element approach using Plaxis program with Hardening Soil model was conducted to simulate both two-dimensional and three-dimensional tunnelling model. Moreover, the new method named semi-3D was proposed to predict the behaviour of Bangkok soil influenced by the tunnel excavation. This paper represents good coherent results between field measurement data and numerical results for both short-term and long-term surface settlements. Especially, the two-dimensional the back-calculated percentage of volume loss and contraction are compared with simulation results. Finally, the numerical outcomes were also compared with the cohesive and non-cohesive soil in Taipei and Kaohsiung.
