As cybersecurity threats become increasingly severe and industry technologies evolve rapidly, cybersecurity vendors must adjust their operational strategies to respond to environmental changes and shifting customer demands. In the wave of digital transformation, how cybersecurity vendors leverage strategic planning and capability building to enable servitization is a key concern. Given the industry's inherent characteristics—marked by the fast evolution of viruses and attack techniques—cybersecurity vendors must maintain a high degree of agility and resilience throughout their transformation processes. As vendors of cybersecurity protection, vendors are also expected to ensure that their services are built upon solid security foundations. Only by doing so can they establish market trust, support sustainable development, and demonstrate the ability to rapidly absorb new knowledge and flexibly respond to user needs—an issue of considerable interest to academia and industry.
This study investigates how cybersecurity vendors enhance service resilience and promote the transformation of cybersecurity products into cloud-based services in the face of high environmental uncertainty, focusing specifically on the roles of absorptive capacity and agility. Using Trend Micro as a case study, the research explores the company's transformation journey across three key stages: building cloud-based protection, transitioning toward serviced cybersecurity offerings, and adopting DevOps agile development practices. The study observes how external environmental changes triggered the activation of absorptive capacity and how the interplay between absorptive capacity and agility enabled the integration of new knowledge into the organization. This dual capability facilitated the successful application of knowledge to Trend Micro's business model, continually strengthening its technological capabilities and enabling the delivery of customer-centric services. Through this process, Trend Micro has maintained a competitive edge in cybersecurity. Based on the case analysis, this study proposes a mechanism of agile absorptive capacity that may serve as a practical reference for other organizations facing similar conditions. It also offers actionable insights for companies entering the service-oriented and cloud-based cybersecurity market. Organizations facing similar conditions. It also offers actionable insights for companies aiming to enter the service-oriented and cloud-based cybersecurity market.
