本研究旨在探討西蒙・斯蒂文的著作《論堡壘要塞建築術》中，建立的防禦觀念與堡壘要塞設計原則。透過理論建立全面性的原則，了解其制定的目的，並透過理論與實踐案例的對照，進而推估現實情況。十六世紀時，義大利防禦工事逐漸成熟，能抵禦火砲的箭形稜堡成為歐洲防禦工事上的重要角色，並發展出「義大利系統」，也開啟圍城攻防型態。至十七世紀中葉時，荷蘭處於八十年戰爭期間，為了與各方敵軍對抗，除了引進「義大利系統」，也發展出屬於尼德蘭的「舊荷蘭系統」，並在實踐案例跟理論間相互修正。
西蒙・斯蒂文在十六世紀的荷蘭共和國，扮演著推動軍事發展重要的角色之一，在執政者毛里茨的支持下，促成萊登大學工程學院課程的建立，並在1594年出版《論堡壘要塞建築術》作為教科書使用，試著討論建造堡壘要塞的原則。因此，本研究將透過此著作與低地國本土、VOC海外與臺灣，三個部分的案例進行比對，探討理論在實踐的關聯性，尋找相同部分可能來自的共同經驗與相異部分的發展原因。
從研究的整理中，針對平面、稜堡、幕牆分別提出幾項理想的設計原則：在平面的部分以圍出最大面積的正多邊形為理想，稜堡則是盡可能符合縱射砲彈軌道，幕牆則以筆直的雙層幕牆為佳；堡壘的特殊議題，包括選址、營造，則分析了地勢、臨海及建造材料。比對案例後發現，低地國本土案例在戰爭前期大多保留「義大利系統」的特徵；戰爭中期的堡壘，則是在頻繁的戰爭需求下，發展出較為簡易的「舊荷蘭系統」；戰爭後期時，因為國力趨漸穩定，且敵軍日益強大，發展出較為複雜的「新荷蘭系統」，這之中的影響可能來自西蒙・斯蒂文的論述。
荷蘭東印度公司的海外案例在前期受到葡萄亞與西班亞的影響較重；但在巴達維亞總部成立後，有趨漸統一，受西蒙・斯蒂文的建議，大多形式為「方形平面加四稜堡」，並且在選址上，大多挑選在「靠海的沿岸平原」。臺灣的熱蘭遮堡，在形式上有少見的雙層幕牆、與土造加砌磚牆體，選址上在「靠海的沿岸平原」。總總現象雖無法說皆來自西蒙・斯蒂文的觀念，但透過對西蒙・斯蒂文在巴達維亞建造的意見應能產生或多或少的間接影響。
綜合上述，在研究的對照中可以反映出三點：其一，為西蒙・斯蒂文對於「義大利系統」防禦工事的經驗；其二，為西蒙・斯蒂文對於荷蘭本土傳統建造的經驗；最後，可反映出此著作對於後續堡壘發展的影響性。

This thesis aims to research Simon Stevin’s 16th-century work De Sterctenbouwing to explore the defensive concepts and fortress design principles. By establishing comprehensive theoretical foundations, the study discerns their intention and projects real-world scenarios were estimating through theory-practice comparisons. The advent of artillery in the 15th century catalyzed transformative shifts in Europe’s fortifications, propelling the evolution of defense structures. The 16th century witnessed the maturation of Italian defensive fortifications, with arrow-shaped bastions emerging as key elements against artillery, fostering the “Italian system” and siege warfare tactics.
Till the middle of the 17th century, amidst the Eighty Years’ War, the Netherlands embraced the “Italian system” while developing the “Old Dutch system” to counter diverse foes. This era saw symbiotic refinement between practice and theory. Simon Stevin’s role was pivotal in the 16th-century Dutch Republic, bolstering military progress. With the support of Maurits van Oranje, he established engineering courses at Leiden University and published De Sterctenbouwing as a fortress construction primer, attempting to discuss the principle of fortress building.
Comparative analysis highlights influence on Stevin, including the experiences in Italian-style systems, traditional Dutch methods, and the enduring impact on subsequent fortress development. Leiden University's military engineering graduates joined the Dutch East India Company, applying theory in overseas colonies, revealing theory-practice adaptability. This adaptation underscores unique Dutch dynamics, especially in overseas fortification planning.
