At unsignalized intersections, the lack of traffic control measures often leads to driver uncertainty, increasing the risk of traffic conflicts. According to statistics from Taiwan's National Police Agency (2022–2024), motorcycles accounted for the highest proportion of accidents at such intersections (55.6%), primarily due to human error and traffic violations. Road signs, pavement markings, and navigation systems are common control tools; the former help riders follow right-of-way rules, while the latter provides real-time route guidance but may also cause driver distraction. This study investigates the effects of these two control methods on motorcyclists’ visual attention distribution and braking reactions at unsignalized intersections.
Eye-tracking technology and first-person perspective simulation videos were used to collect participants’ eye movement data and braking reaction times. Statistical analyses were conducted to examine the effects of the two control methods on visual attention and braking behavior, with heatmaps used to visualize attention distribution.
Most existing eye-tracking studies focus on car drivers and bicycle users, while research on motorcyclists remains limited. This study fills that gap by providing empirical data, offering valuable insights for future road design improvements and traffic safety policymaking.
