The objective of this study is to examine the relation between CEO total pay and general managerial ability. I study a sample of 257 firm-year observations listed on Taiwan Stock Exchange during the period January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2014 from TEJ database. I create an index (the General Ability Index) to measure CEO’s general managerial ability based on CEO’s past work experience (prior to his current position), including mobility across positions, firms and industries and position experience as CEO. I find that CEOs who are one standard deviation higher in the General Ability Index earn 6% higher in annual pay. This result suggests that generalist CEOs can get higher pays relative to specialist CEOs.
