Introduction: Recently, outdoor fitness equipment has become popular and developed rapidly in many countries. It provided an opportunity for the public to engage in more exercise. However, most people might not follow the instructions, so the misuse of the equipment could possibly cause safety problems such as injury. Hence, the purposes of this study are:
1. Analyze actual public behaviors of using outdoor fitness equipment.
2. Investigate if the differences among gender and age lead to different behaviors when using outdoor fitness equipment.
3. Evaluate the risks and benefits of using outdoor fitness equipment in different user modes.
4. Collect user instructions of outdoor fitness equipment and integrate the content of expert assessments in order to provide the “training goals” and corresponding “user instructions” of outdoor fitness equipment.
Method: The videoed data analyzed in this study was from the documentaries taken by previous researchers. There were many outdoor fitness equipment and users in the park recorded in these videos. In the first phase, researcher used the Mangold INTERACT Software to record, analyze and categorize user behaviors. The main statistical method of describing quantitative data is Pearson’s chi-square test. In the second phase, expert assessments through focus group interview were conducted to evaluate the potential risks and benefits of using outdoor fitness equipment in different behaviors.
Result: The study summarized seven different types of user behaviors for Triple Waist Twister, Air Walker and Ski Machine, and six different types for Waist and Back Massager. There were no significant differences among gender and age that lead to different behaviors for the users of Triple Waist Twister and Waist and Back Massager. However, statistical results revealed significant differences among gender and age that lead to different behaviors for the users of Air Walker and Ski Machine (p-value < .05). The study provided several “training goals” and corresponding “user instructions” for Triple Waist Twister, Air Walker, Ski Machine and Waist and Back Massager respectively.
Conclusion: This is the first study that revealed the empirical data and assessments regarding user behaviors of outdoor fitness equipment. It has significant implications on governmental policy and manufacturers for reference.
