本研究以圍繞日本周邊之領土爭議做為觀察東北亞各國權力競逐的指標，藉以分析此一議題對東北亞區域安全之影響。日本領土爭議涉及東北亞多數國家，若特定國家改變其立場，勢必迫使相關國家回應，進而改變現狀，影響地緣權力的平衡與區域秩序的穩定。
本研究的立論在於（一）日俄與日韓的領土糾紛不至於改變區域安全的現狀；相反地，（二）領土問題已成為中日兩國在地緣政治與經濟相互競爭與對立以外，另一項影響雙邊關係至於區域安全的變因。（三） 東北亞的穩定符合美國之戰略利益，故美國將避免相關國家因領土問題展開權力競逐與碰撞，並將對企圖改變區域權力均衡以及其作為與美國國家利益不一致的一方施壓，以維護地緣政治的現狀。
在理論上，本研究援引權力平衡理論以探究中、日、美三國於此一議題上之權力互動。以此解釋各國立場與決策之轉變，進而析論因領土議題所形成的權力政治對區域安全之影響。最後，本研究對權力平衡理論加以修正，重新界定該理論對對抗與均勢的定義。分析發現，美國作為中日兩強權之平衡者，將戮力制約兩國的權力擴張，促使兩國於區域內形成權力均勢。若兩國維持均勢，領土爭議之現狀將持續，區域的穩定亦可維繫。然若美國立場改變，則權力結構傾斜於一方，可能打破領土爭議之現狀，區域安全秩序亦將出現浮動。

This research takes the territorial disputes surrounding Japan as the indicators of the power struggles among Northeast Asian countries, and it also analyzes the influence this issue could have on the regional security of Northeast Asia. The territorial disputes of Japan involve most of the Northeast Asian countries. If certain countries change their positions, others will be forced to make responses, which will lead to changing the status quo and disturbing the balance of geopolitical power and regional stability.
This research sets its argument on the following assumptions: (A) The Japan-Russia and Japan-Korea territorial disputes will not change the status quo of regional security; on the other hand, (B) aside from China and Japan’s geopolitical and economic confrontations, the territorial dispute has become another factor that could affect the China-Japan relation and regional security. (C) The stability of Northeast Asia is in the strategic interests of the United States. Therefore, the US will try to withhold the countries involved in territorial disputes from clashing with one another. In order to preserve the geopolitical status quo, the US will also put pressure on whoever tries to change the balance of regional power and whoever acts against US’ interests.
In terms of theoretical background, this research quotes the theory of the balance of power to investigate the power interactions among China, Japan, and the US on this issue. Based on this theory, this research explains the changing of countries’ positions and policies; it further analyzes the impacts that power politics, which is formed on territorial issues, could have on regional security. Finally, this research modifies the theory of balance of power, redefining equilibrium and confrontation. The analysis states that: given the US’ role as the equilibrator between the two powers---China and Japan, the US will strive to contain the two countries’ power expansions, urging them to form regional balance of power. If China and Japan maintain the balance, the territorial disputes will continue to exist, and the regional stability thus can be kept. But if the US changes its position and the power structure tilts to one side, the territorial status quo could be broken and regional security and stability will also be shaken.
