萬昌街開闢及拓寬是根據1986年變更台南市第四區細部計畫(道路系統通盤檢討)案，其計畫考量健全土地利用價值，改善居住環境及商業活動，以促進市中心商業區健全發展，依區內活動機能配合現況發展需要。但實質使用效益以及開闢後被破壞之建物利用並非計畫前能考慮周全的，都市開發時往往因因應發展需求而開闢及拓寬道路，產生許多畸零地與銳角建築，而難以使用的地塊造成空間散亂。
本研究從萬昌街沿街商業使用進行調查，將以建築和街道之媒介－建築立面的使用與形式為出發點進行探討，針對萬昌街沿街的建築進行商業立面元素分析，並藉由不同年代發展圖與圖底圖比對沿街建築與道路紋理，檢視其發展成因與脈絡。本研究從現況發展之建築使用，了解其道路開闢後所產生之新的地塊與其建築利用之情形，藉此提出潛力與限制面，做為未來相關計畫之參考。

The opening and expansion of Wan-chang Street was according to the plan changing the fourth district of Tainan city in 1986(an overall review of road system). Depending on the functions of the region and the needs of development in the current situation, the plan considered the value of land use, improved the living environment and business activities in order to promote the downtown business district. Nevertheless, the real efficiency of use and destruction of the building after being opened was not well considered. It is often that roads are opened and expanded in order to respond to the needs of development. The opening of an urban city often results in a great deal of scattered areas and acute construction. Furthermore, those fragmented areas cause space disordered.

The current study investigates the commercial use along Wan-chang Street. The use and form of the building façade, the media of buildings and streets, is taken as the starting point to explore the street. The study further analyzes the elements of the commercial building façade along Wan-chang Street. Also, by viewing buildings and texture of the street based on the development plan and the base map of different time, the study examines the cause and context of the development of Wan-chang Street. According to the current use of the existing buildings, it is more clear how new lands and building are utilized after the opening of the street. The study further suggests the aspects of potentials and limitations as reference for future plans.
