The main purpose of this study is to examine the impacts of the major events that have taken place in recent years on the electronic stock index of Taiwan. The major events include the China stock market crash in 2015, the 2016 Taiwan presidential election and the U.S. presidential election in 2016. Multiple regression models were used to conduct the empirical research on the electronic stock index during the period from January 2012 to February 2017.
The dependent variable is the electronic stock index of Taiwan. The major events including the China stock market crash in 2015, the 2016 Taiwan presidential election, and the U.S. presidential election in 2016 are set as dummy variables. The macroeconomic variables include money supply, exchange rate, NASDAQ Composite Index, the consumer price index, and the export growth rate of the electronics industry.
According to the empirical analysis, it was determined that the consumer price index and exchange rate did not have significant effects on the electronic stock index of Taiwan during the study period. However, the export growth rate of the electronics industry, money supply, and NASDAQ Composite Index had significantly positive effects on the electronic stock index over the same period. In the case of the major events, the U.S. presidential election in 2016 did not have significant effects on the electronic stock index of Taiwan. The 2016 Taiwan presidential election only had a slight impact on the electronic stock index. The China stock market crash in 2015 had significantly negative effects on the electronic stock index.
