In the past two decades, technology and market have changed at a dramatically rapid pace. Firms have recognized that they need to cooperate with others to share risks and acquire necessary resources. Therefore, firms have been increasingly willing to participate in the business network. Although the increasing importance of the business network, little has been done in the literature in examining the relationships among the internal and external determinants, the intensity of the business network, and the innovative performance of the firms. Therefore, this study attempts to fill the gap in the literature by providing an integrative research framework through extensive literature review to identify the key determinants and to examine the relationships among these determinants, the intensity of the business network, and the innovation performance of the firms. Based on resource-based perspective, hypotheses were proposed and then examined through an empirical study.
The population in this study is the top 5000 firms of Taiwan listed in the China Credit Incorporation. A random stratified sampling method was used to select 120 firms in each of the five 1000 levels. 600 questionnaires were mailed. Of the 600 questionnaires mailed, 114 responses were received and four of them were incomplete. The remaining 110 valid and complete questionnaires were used for the quantitative analysis. It represents a useable response rate of 18.33%.
The major findings of this study include: First, the results of the canonical correlation, chi-square test, and ANOVA analyses show support for the direct effects of industry environment, core competence, and organization strategy on the intensity of business network. Secondly, the results of the regression and ANOVA analyses suggest that the intensity of the business network and core competence have positive impacts on the innovative performance while different type of organization strategy results in different level of innovative performance. Finally, the results of ANOVA analyses indicate that core competence and organization strategy have strong interaction effects with the intensity of business network on the innovative performance.
