For accidents in children and adolescents , about 10﹪to 25﹪are related to school accidents. In European and American, the incidence rate is 1.1/100 student-year to 5.4/100 student-year. The incidence rate for school-related injuries for junior school students in Kaohsiung, Taiwan is 27.3/100 student-year.
In order to describe the whole scenario of safety and health related accidents and recognition of students at colleges and universities, Self-administered questionnaires were delivered to samples to collect the whole scenario of their safety and health related accidents (including near accidents ) happened at schools or on the way to or from schools between September in 1999 and June in 2000. The study populations were the students of colleges and universities in Taiwan area, and samples were selected by stratified random sampling by school and department categories.
The weighted retrieve rate was 54.52%. The incidence rate of accident was 229.600/00 while near accidents were included. And under the situation that accidents resulted in at least one day temporary disability ,the rate was 12.080/00. The incidence rate of period of accidents were 249.90 0/00 at the period of being on the way to or from schools, 41.43 0/00 at the period of class change, 33.76 0/00 at the period of competition, and 17.37 0/00at the period of class. The five major event of accidents were motor vehicle crash (249.83 0/00), sports-related injury (38.54 0/0), tripped/slipped (25.70 0/00), collision (18.71 0/00), and exposure to dangerous subjects (3.99 0/00). .And the major causal factor of accidents was artificial carelessness (including self and others) , the proportion was 68.1%.
The injuries resulted from accidents occurred on the campus were minor injuries. However, the incidence rate of accident that resulted in at least one day temporary disability was much higher than that of occupational injuries of laborers in Taiwn. Thus, the school-related accident could not be ignored.
