For healthcare professionals electronic health records will be an important change for the health care industry. Electronic health records are the conversion of traditional paper charts into a digital form. This research is divided into two different sections. In this research we see what users want for electronic health records in the future from what they are dealing with now. It also dwells into the state of electronic health records exchange today. In this research we will test four different theories. The first three will be social exchange theory, transaction cost theory, and institutional perspective theory. The last theory is the information systems success theory, which will be used for the second study.
For the first study our hypotheses were not supported. This leads us to interview professionals in the field to get a clearer idea of what is going on. Professionals state that EHR exchange is not possible today, due to various roadblocks. Because of this we have discovered that there needs to be significant improvements in the case of EHR after creating a survey of their responses. System creators should look at the specific improvements that users are pointing out
