近代競爭策略的發展迅速，企業所積極爭取的競爭優勢，由製造能力、產品品質、顧客滿意、創新能力……發展到以資源競爭為主。何耐資源有限而慾望無窮，資源因企業間相互爭奪而不足，於是乎企業間往往形成，聯合次要敵人以打擊主要敵人的競合策略，但卻又在結盟的過程中，因競合雙方的目標重疊而有既希望相互合作又擔心對方背叛的兩難困境。
本研究藉由資源基礎理論、資源依存理論、競合理論與競局理論，發展出一套分析企業間競合關係的模式。此模式分為四大步驟：1.資源為基礎的競爭策略依據；2.競合理論中價值網形成的競爭環境分析；3.藉囚犯困境競局的競爭者分析；4.延伸囚犯困境研究來促進競合關係的穩定。更藉由微風廣場為例，將其與太平洋SOGO百貨的競合關係，實際運用此模式加以分析與建議。
除了給予面臨水平競合的企業一條新的思路外，本研究更建議微風廣場藉由外力競爭者的威脅（如京華城商圈）與內力互補者的需求（如中興百貨），增加與SOGO忠孝店合作的意願；並成立專責團隊定期對於共營商圈的規劃、實行與實際獲益加以溝通交流；更逐漸培養屬於微風廣場的特有品牌，從功能、客層與產品上逐漸與SOGO忠孝店區隔開來，並同時也與SOGO忠孝店緊密結合、相互依賴。
