This study investigates the impact of social trust on industrial robot density and analyzes the moderating effects of employment vulnerability and access to finance. Employing a cross-country panel dataset of 62 countries from 2002 to 2023, this paper conducts an empirical analysis using a first-difference model to mitigate the confounding effects of country-specific fixed characteristics and cross-country level differences. The empirical results reveal a significant positive association between social trust and changes in industrial robot density. Furthermore, this relationship is primarily observed in countries with lower employment vulnerability and a higher proportion of formal employment. In contrast, the sub-sample analysis based on access to finance provides relatively weaker evidence. Overall, this study indicates that social trust may serve as a crucial informal institutional factor influencing the diffusion of automation technologies.
