This thesis focused on the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in 1826-1846. The S.D.U.K. plays a very important role in labour education in nineteenth-century England before the England government pay attention to the labour education. In this thesis, the establishment and organization process of S.D.U.K. and the defect investigation of Mechanics’ Institutes by scientific analysis method was presented. The S.D.U.K. educated the labour by enthusiastic publication. This thesis also try to reconstruct and explore the development of labour education in nineteenth-century England by S.D.U.K..
This thesis was divided into five chapters. Chapter one states the newly rising labour class was still doubted by the community and therefore labour education proceeded informally. Chapter two states how Henry Peter Brougham established the S.D.U.K. and the formation of organization, budge, member, goal and believe of the S.D.U.K.. Chapter three focused on the inspection of Mechanics’ Institutes by the S.D.U.K.. By frequent defect inspection, the S.D.U.K. basically developed unique laboring education. In chapter four, the strategy of variable publication make the S.D.U.K. to stand out in the publisher market. These publications also became the very important medium to educate the labour class. The final chapter presented the relationship between the content of the publication, the labouring education and the type of selected knowledge by the S.D.U.K..
