Under the influence of globalization, cultural, economic, political, and social issues have been paid more and more attention. They have the characteristics of variability and diversity, making it more urgent for people to conserve and inherit cultural heritage. Therefore, if the conservation of cultural heritage is a local and collective issue, it will be closely related to continue local history and culture, satisfy the sense of belonging and identity. Nowadays, appropriate reuse of space will show a positive and dynamic concept of conservation, which is also the development trend of sustainable management of local culture.
In this study, the West Central District of Tainan City is taken as the study area, and ten old building sites are selected to conduct a questionnaire survey. The research confirms that the relationship between adaptive reuse and sense of identity is wholly complete mediation. Historic perception and affective appraisal play critical roles in enhancing people's sense of identity. Among them, adaptive reuse is the key to affect historic perception, and building performance and comfort is the main reason to enhance emotional evaluation positively. Based on this, the sense of identity is achieved. When reusing old buildings, we should give priority to the influential factors. Pay attention to the architectural appearance and details, present the authentic historical characteristics, provide perfect spatial quality and comfort, and make people have a pleasant and comfortable emotional experience. Finally, people will identify with the culture, establish contact with the place, and achieve their identity and belonging to the city.
