This thesis proposes the design and implementation of a gesture input method as one of the human machine interface on smartphones. This design is motivated by the scenarios for the blind or those inconvenient conditions for input by touching keyboard or touch-screen on smartphones directly. The major innovation in this thesis is that we introduce the ability of inertial measure unit into the input process and turn the input method into 3-dimensional. This work is implemented on Android platform, and it has been tested with an experiment which has 10 participants to evaluate its performance. The highest input speed is up to 4.2 words per minute, and the average entry speed is 3.033 wpm. Although the gesture input entry speed is not comparable with a keyboard or a virtual keypad, it shows the potential that the proposed gesture input is competitive in no-keyboard environment.
