本研究以西方現代住宅建築為對象，探討西方社會現代化演變產生的新生活風格對住宅建築之影響。為文首先解析住宅建築在西方現代建築發展中的重要性，以及引發西方新生活風格產生的現代化社會背景條件，並指出兩個對於新生活風格形塑的主要因素：工業革命與消費主義。其次針對工業革命與消費主義兩大因素，對於西方建築藝術的影響進行論述，分別以機械化生產與中產階級兩大內涵回扣這兩因素與現代住宅建築發展的交互關係。在前述的理論框架下，先以工業革命根源的英國開啟討論，並述及英國對於工業革命與消費主義在住宅建築上的回應，如何影響現代建築國際風格的發源地德國的住宅建築發展。
本研究發現現代住宅建築的萌發，在建築生產上，受到了建築學院教學內容納入室內裝飾的影響，而在建築需求上，則受到中產階級與新富階層的生活樣態、消費與社交活動的影響。在前述條件的基礎上，現代住宅建築首先在英國透過美術與工藝運動，從工藝美術、室內裝飾到住宅建築開展，並形成一體化設計生活型態的模式。而這個工藝美術、室內裝飾與住宅建築的運作模式，透過德國統一後對較早工業化國家的學習，引入德國境內。並藉由以德意志工藝聯盟為首的一系列工藝美術的改革與住宅建築的實踐，配合德國社會需求發展出德國的現代住宅模式。而第一次戰後，社會結構與思想的改變，反映在改革戰前德國的現代住宅模式，並發展出無裝飾的視覺造型，形成新式樣的現代住宅建築。
最後本研究透過現代住宅建築，觀察西方社會現代化衍生的新生活風格與西方建築現代化過程之交互關係，結論指出西方建築現代化之過程，建立在建築師教育體制、社會階層轉變等與社會型態相關改造上，進一步推進建築創作概念與建築建造方法的演進。此外，本研究亦顯示在西方社會現代化過程中，其對於「建築」在知識體系中的位置也發生了變化，並呈現在西方不同世代的現代建築史著作中。

This study focuses on modern domestic architecture in the West, exploring how new lifestyle trends arising from societal modernization have influenced domestic architecture. This study applied secondary sources, using societal research methods to re-examine the historical development of Western modernization on architecture before modernism around modern domestic architecture. Through societal research methods, this study analyzed the rise of the middle class in the social structure and their visual image, the evolution of the content of profession and self-identification of architects, juxtapositioned these two developments of middle-class and architects, and displayed that the formation of the new lifestyle and modern domestic architecture between the mid-19th century to the early 20th century resulted from the relationship development between them. This study re-estimated the diverse relationship between Architecture, Fine Arts, and Applied Arts during the Industrial Revolution by the focus on domestic architecture. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive perspective on the evolution of modern domestic architecture in the West, and also on the modern development of Western architecture.
