Research on the urban space of the Dutch East India Company colonial cities has predominantly centered on the Company's own planning ideologies and urban morphology, with relatively limited attention devoted to the manner in which the VOC confronted and transformed existing urban structures upon inheriting Portuguese colonial cities during periods of political transition. The present thesis is set against the backdrop of the VOC's succession of Portuguese colonial cities in the mid-seventeenth century. This study utilizes Malacca, Colombo, and Cochin as case studies to analyze the VOC's urban transformation strategies under pre-existing spatial conditions and to explore the planning implications reflected in the transformation process.
The three cities exhibit distinctly different outcomes, shaped by their respective roles within the VOC's Asian trading network. Malacca, situated between ideal planning and practical constraints, has largely preserved its Portuguese-era castle structure, with the Malacca River serving as a buffer zone between the castle and the town. Colombo, designated as the administrative capital of the VOC in South Asia, received substantial resources and most completely realized the VOC's spatial model of "castle — castle square — town." The city of Cochin was valued primarily for its strategic military importance. It was reduced to a minimal enclosed walled city, a development that did not include the castle-town separation seen in the other two cases.
Through a comparative analysis of these three cities, this thesis illuminates how the VOC, amid political transition, adopted differentiated transformation strategies rather than a uniform planning model, providing a concrete comparative foundation for understanding the flexibility and limitations of VOC colonial urban planning in Asia.
