Background: Taiwan became an aged society relatively recently. As the elderly population grew, challenges emerged. With increasing age, physical fitness, muscle strength, and response reactions decrease. Consequently, accidents such as falls become more prevalent. Functional fitness is very important for the elderly. Many studies have pointed out that regular exercise can improve the functional fitness and quality of life of elderly individuals. However, determining how drumming group training improves physical fitness and quality of life has not been sufficiently examined and requires further investigation.
Purpose: This study was aimed toward examining the influences of Swiss ball drumming training on the quality of life and functional fitness of older adults in the community.
Methods: Elderly members of the community in Tainan City, Taiwan participated in this quasi-experimental study. The participants were divided into two groups: a control and an intervention group. The intervention group participated in integrated drumming group training consisted of 60-minuteSwiss ball drumming twice a week for 12 weeks. The researcher used SPSS 20.0 statistical software for the data analysis, including descriptive statistics, a one-way analysis of variance for functional fitness, reaction time, proprioception, the SF-12 score, the SLUMS score, and a one-way ANCOVA to compare the changes in the dependent variables before and after the 12-week intervention in the experimental and control groups.
Result: A total of 39 older adults completed the pre- and post-tests (22 in the experimental group and 17 in the control group). The experimental group had significant improvements as compared to the control group in terms of the following variables: Saint Louis University Mental Status Exam (orientation) (experimental: 0%, control group: -8.33%), functional physical fitness (30 second chair stand) (experimental group: +7.42%, control group: -9.15%), 2-minute step test (experimental group: +6.27%, control group: -6.67%), and simple reaction time (experimental group: -4.71%, control group +3.21%). In terms of the use of the BioSway, the experimental group's eyes open, firm surface, eyes open, foam surface and eyes closed, foam surface showed improvement (-12.03%~-4.94%), while no significant improvement was found in the control group (p < .05). In terms of dynamic balance and agility, there were no significant between-group differences (experimental group (+6.36%), control group (-4.83%) (p=.05)). In the physical and mental components of the quality of life, there were no significant between-group differences (experimental group: +1.23%, control group: -5.39%; experimental group: -2.36%, control group: -1.07%, respectively).
Conclusion: After 12 weeks of Swiss ball drumming training, this mind-body integrated exercise effectively improved the quality of life, functional fitness, and whole body control ability of the participants. Swiss ball drumming training incorporates foot movement and improves dynamic balance and agility. Along with a mouth movement (like singing) and brain exercise, this will help improve the cognitive functions of the elderly. It is recommended that integrated exercise training include whole body exercise in this population in order to improve the control of the entire body and preventing falls.
