In recent years, widespread misinformation on social media is a cause of suspicion and fear among the public as well as harmful effects on individuals’ well-being. Understanding the reasons behind misinformation sharing would help to prevent the spread of misinformation online. Drawing from Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Heuristic-Systematic Model (HSM), we conducted an online survey of 369 active users on Facebook to empirically investigate the effects of users’ self-determined motivations (Autonomy, Competence, Relatedness), information processing modes (heuristic vs. systematic) on sharing misinformation behavior. The present research also investigates the effects of a social media context-based factor – fear of missing out (FoMO) on users’ behavior toward sharing misinformation. The findings suggest that users’ behavior in sharing misinformation is highly influenced by their belief in the credibility of information through heuristic information processing mode, and also the degree of “fear of missing out” on social media. Several findings with regard to demographic characteristics and other control factors are also showed out. The key findings, implications, and limitations are discussed in this paper.
