This research empirically evaluates the effects of safety climate and safety performance in handling of bulk cargo from bulk stevedoring companies for the port of Kaohsiung . Based on a factor analysis, seven factors are extracted from the safety climate attributes, these are supervisor safety, safety training, safety equipment, safety management attitude, coworker attitude, safety obey attitude, and personal safety attitude ,whereas four factors are extracted from the safety performance, namely, safety behavior, work environment, emergency ability, and accident communication.
Based on a structural equation modeling approach, results showed that safety management had a positive influence on safety attitude, whereas safety attitude had a positive influence on safety performance in the context of bulk stevedoring companies. However, the impact of safety management on safety performance was not supported in this study. Practical implications of improving safety management in the research findings are discussed.
