就具有歷史文化脈絡的臺南市東門城而言，都市的保存(conservation)與維護的政策擬定時常在都市規劃體系中有所忽略，遺漏了都市發展變遷下所存留的歷史空間「資訊」，因而犧牲了具有歷史環境特質的都市風貌，導致歷史文化記憶的消失與都市生活場域的零碎。
本研究是以都市形態學(urban morphology)為理論基礎下，分析臺南市東門城與其周邊的都市風貌(townscape)，找出其形態時期(morphological period)、都市型態複合型體(form complex)與形態區域(morphological region)。透過都市平面分析法(town-plan analysis)拆解都市型態複合型體中的建築紋理(building fabric)、土地與建築使用(land and building use)與都市平面(town plan)，最終歸結於形態單元(morphotope)，並由ㄧ組組同質性高的形態單元歸納出形態區域類型與劃分範圍。
歸納出臺南市東門城具有5種形態區域類型與其個別附屬共23種平面單元(plan-unit)。
本研究結論加入都市歷史保存與維護的觀點，將歷史保存與都市風貌兩者論述綜合說明，希冀研究成果 - 形態區域，能對於未來若有計劃性將東門城周邊劃設為保存區時，能依照形態區域的類型與劃分範圍作為重要的參考依據，分類保存區內不同的空間類型與劃設類型範圍，落實歷史保存與都市規劃之間的鏈結。

As far as the East Gate in Tainan with historical and cultural context is concerned, the strategy of urban conservation and maintenance is often neglected in the urban planning system, leaving out the "information" of the historical space left under the urban development changes. Sacrifice the townscape with historical environment characteristics, leading to the disappearance of historical and cultural memories and fragmentation of urban life.
Based on the theory of urban morphology, this study analyzes the surrounding urban landscape of East gate in Tainan , and finds its morphological period, form complex and morphological region.
Town-plan analysis is used to disassemble the building fabric, land and building use, and town plan in the form complex, and finally it comes down to the morphotope, and the morphotope with high homogeneity of the group by group can be used to summarize the morphological region type and division range. In the end of ,identify the five types of morphological regions and their twenty-three types of plan-units in the East gate.
