This study builds on Ke (2021) to examine the relationship between spouses’ financial background and household stock market participation in Taiwan, and further investigates whether gender role attitudes are associated with differences in this relationship. Using data from the 2004 to 2020 waves of the Panel Study of Family Dynamics (PSFD), the analysis focuses on married or cohabiting households in which both spouses are between 24 and 65 years old. Financial background is measured by whether an individual works in a finance-related occupation, while household stock market participation is proxied by the receipt of dividend income. The empirical results show that wives’ financial background is positively associated with household stock market participation, whereas the corresponding association for husbands is relatively weaker. Further analyses indicate that this pattern varies across households with different gender role attitudes. In households with more traditional gender role norms, the association between wives’ financial background and household stock market participation tends to be weaker, while the corresponding association for husbands becomes relatively stronger. Overall, the findings suggest that, in households with less traditional gender norms, wives’ financial background may play a larger role in shaping household investment behavior, whereas this relationship appears to be more limited in households with more traditional views. These findings provide evidence on the relationship between gender norms and household financial decision-making in Taiwan.
