Knowledge sharing, which is defined as the transaction between the knowledge owners and the knowledge accepters, is the main topic in the knowledge management and has been discussed several years. Most existing studies of knowledge sharing focus on the issue of how to increase the intention of the knowledge owner to release their knowledge, but few of them intend to identify the influencing factors of the intention of knowledge accepter to accept knowledge.Because of theprevalence of the Internet and the rapid advance of information technology, many organizations put efforts to preserving and creating more useful knowledge by means of virtual communities.
Because of knowledge would display its real value only if the right person obtains the knowledge what he or she really needs, and hence it is critical for knowledge seekers to clearly define their knowledge demand. As a result, this research aims to examine the influence of knowledge demand certainty on the effectiveness of knowledge sharing tools and knowledge acceptance intention in the context of online virtual communities.
Our research recruited our survey participants from the users of PTT, which is the biggest virtual community in Taiwan, and the empirical data collected from survey were analyzed using the structural equation modeling (SEM). The research results indicate that the degree of knowledge demand certainty has a positive influence on the effectiveness of knowledge sharing tools, and, in turn, has an indirect positive influence on the knowledge acceptance intention in the virtual communities.
Additionally, we found that users’ Internet and web experience has a positive influence on the knowledge sharing tool’s effectiveness. The results has contributed to the virtual community administrators by providing them with insights into choosing, planning, and designing effective knowledge sharing tools, and, consequently, enabled organizations to better develop virtual communities that can effectively help them manage critical knowledge.
